The Winter Folk has great imagery, and a real strong Appalachian Gothic atmosphere. It's not the horror book I was expecting, but it was good in a way that surprised me. The magical elements were engrossing, and I appreciated the mysterious nature of it all. I didn't quite get Vera/Moth as a character, but I did really vibe with her. I found her likeable and entertaining to follow. This book also isn't very scary or suspenseful, so good for those who don't like thrillers, but want spookiness.
