There's a lot to love about this book. The characters are complex and interesting, especially the spirits, and the setting is so wonderfully Gothic. The story itself contains multitudes: a love story, villains, fierce loyalty, and just the right amount of murder-mystery. It is happy at times, scary or sad in others, and most often unsettling. It's a great mix of emotions. What's really great about this book is the uncertainty of the ending. The reader never gets explicitly told if ghosts are real or not, and you have to make the choice for yourself if you're going to believe the main character's story.
